Fitting for the upcoming Halloween today’s Theme at Photohunt is "Scary"! Since we got some scary critters in these parts here, I show you one! An American Alligator
. This one is a big one – 15ft (3,80m) weighing in at about 900 pounds.
This sweetie can exert up to 2000 pound of biting power per square inch.
Head over to the PhotoHunt site to get scared!

I hope there was a nice strong wall between you and the ‘gator. I definitely appreciate them more at a distance.

Yeah, that’s pretty scary. I like the action. It really brings home the scariness of it. Can’t imagine that mouth clamping down on something!

I want to know who measured the biting power! I’m sorry…yes, this is defitely scary! I just don’t think I would like living anywhere close to these huge scary creatures. I love the way he opens his mouth for us! REally great shots!

I thought I was seeing things but there he is with his mouth wide open and slamming shut. What a fun photo but also a magnificent one. When we were in the Everglades a few years back, someone told me that they could jump out of the water with the speed of a porpoise. Is that an exaggeration? True or False? I would be interested in your answer. I still enjoyed my trip there and couldn’t take enough photos of them. Incredible animals and your action shot is great

@Denise: Glad you like!
And yes – it is true that they can jump out of the water. They basically use their tail
as a catapult, to propel them. I have seen them coming up about 6-7 feet without a problem. You have to consider
that a Gators bodystructure consist of almost 90% muscle, the tail being one extremely powerful one. Thus said,
usually they are way to lazy to do it.
Oh, my goodness. Scary, scary, scary. I prefer to look at them through your photo instead of real life. Thank you very much.
