My World Tuesday II – EST

That's my World - come and join!
Here’s your chance to show your world and learn about the world of others!

I continue my yesterdays post with another typical Florida landscape. You’re looking at a typical sandhill. Doesn’t look like sand?
Believe me – under the prairie grass there’s all white Florida Sand. This particular landscape form is an essential one. It’s the home of Florida Gopher Tortoise View Species info in a new window  – a keystone species, whose caves provide shelter for a wide range of other creatures – from rabbits to snakes. Combine it with thick brush you can often find here – Sandhills represent a complete and important ecosystem.

I certainly would not have guessed that was sand! I assume this is where Sandhill Cranes live and get their name? Interesting about the tortoise. I’m learning a lot about Florida.

@Mary: Hmm – good question. Maybe, though I’ve never seen a Sandhill Crane in Sandhills. More in flat area’s, mostly fields that previously have been harvested.

Like the contrast of the tree and sky and “sand”!

Your Sandhills look more like our coastal regions than our sandhills region here in NC. We have several species of turles/tortises indigenous to those areas too.

Probably our most precariously balanced ecosystem is the wetlands along the sounds between the mainland and the barrier islands. There’s a constant struggle to keep those safe, and some pretty stringent environmental regulations governing them.

Love that flawless blue sky as a backdrop. It really sets off the green in the tree. Great entry!

  9. I always love your bird and other wildlife photos.
    They are favorites.

However, this type of post is especially interesting.
When we travel, I am always looking up the Natural History and Geology of the area. It certainly does require taking a lot of books along on trips.

This is a great post and photo. Thanks for sharing the information. It caused me to have an epiphany. I just realized that I only share this type of information part of the time when I post. I’ll try to do better in the future. Thanks for reminding me of this.

A simple photo with a majestic tree. Outstanding.

    Thanks for the recent visit,

BEAUTIFUL CAPTURE. TRY HAS I MIGHT, I CANNOT SEE THE DARNED TURTLE ANYWHERE!!!!!

I believe it must have burrowed under that grass into the white sand that cant be seen either.

Similar landscape to our Okanagan region. Sandy but rich in minerals. Makes for amazing terrain!
