Quiet ahead of the storm…

15 Categories: Photo-Journal •August 18, 2008

Yep - it’s that time of the year again, when Floridians do sort of pay the price of living in paradise.

Nope - not talking of excessive heat and humidity. We got A/C to cure that ) at least inside.
What I am talking about are visitors, with innocent sounding names - like in the current
case - Fay. Yeah - it’s Hurricane season and after having been left alone for 3 years,
we will get some! In this case - hopefully - TS/Hurricane Fay will however be not entirley
dreaded - for she’s bringing 5-6 inches of very much needed rain. And when she will be
over my head - she won’t be Hurricane anymore anyway.

I myself took the time to use the last hours of sunshine to head out and go shooting!
While it was quiet - as it just is in peak summer, I saw some larger birds - Killdear,
Great White Egret View definition in a new window, Snowy Egret View definition in a new window, Great Blue Heron View definition in a new window, Tri-colored Heron View definition in a new window, a Willet View definition in a new window  - but
most of all Dragonflies. Especially one seemed to be particulary interested in me.
It hovered around me for quite a while - giving me the chance to get some
decent in flight shots, that I will show in the next days along with more Dragons!

I start out however with a very nice Tri-colored Heron against the sun, providing quite a
dramatic sight. And of course Bob. That’s how I call the hovering Dragon, who followed
me for a while.

Tri-colored Heron

these guys are so tough to ID - my guestimate is it being a red-tailed Pennant. But don’t take my word for it. ;)

15 Nods! Why not add you two cents? to “ Quiet ahead of the storm… ”

I always know it will be good when I visit and I am not disappointed. Love the watery horizontals to go with the Heron. And dragonflies get my approval anytime. Enjoy the rains and I hope they don’t become newsworthy!

I’ve never been through a hurricane and don’t want to. That first shot is amazing. I love the green reflections in the water. As for that dragonfly, I’d say that was more than a decent shot. ;-) If I ever manage to catch one in flight like that I think I’d faint from shock. LOL! :-)

Love the shot of the heron! So tranquil. The dragonfly is really cool too. I don’t envy you dealing with the hurricanes. Been there, done that, OVER IT! We went through Charley, Frances and Jeanne in 2004. That was more than enough for me. Charley tore up our trailer park. Fortunately, the only damage we had was missing siding, but our crazy neighbor was out in the storm and caught the siding as it blew across the yard. We didn’t have to buy any to replace it!

I have been working on a dragonfly post and I’m happy to hear you say they are hard to id because I don’t have a clue what I have. :)
Be careful with Fay, hope she is a gentle lady.

Lovely photos, as always! I hope the storm won’t cause any real problems. I was really disappointed that we didn’t get a chance to try to meet you - this trip turned into a family thing - also a good thing, but hard to fit into one week. We were anxious to see you in action.

I’m in awe of both shots! The heron is so pleasing with the lovely colors and the bird’s silhouette as the focal point. And you caught that dragonfly in flight - wow! That is not easy to do!!! Bravo!

Klaus: Loved the Heron shot but Bob is amazing. A trained and named Dragonfly, you are a special photographer.

I like the photo of “Bob”, great in-flight capture. The heron silhouette is outstanding! Glad to see Fay came ashore as a tropical storm instead of a hurricane. I do not miss hurricane season in Florida!

That greenish, sparkly water in the heron picture is incredible. And I’m amazed at the dragonfly in flight.
