I rarely use it on animals, but flowers and trees are a great "victim" for it. I work with it on rare occasions, but mostly it creates images that are very unnatural looking - and if overused - images just look plain wrong. Same goes for Tone mapping, which has as similar approach as HDR, but works from just one image. I've seen hundreds of HDR's but only maybe a handful really were mindblowingly good.
