My Eastern Standard time edition of ABC Wednesday’s "F" is about Fire.
This one shows a controlled burn. They are applied to reap the effects of natural
wildfires in a controlled way.

Good News for those in the market for a DSLR!
2 Great Cameras will be available in October: The 15mp Canon 50D with ISO up to 12,800, priced around $1,300, and
the long expected successor of Nikon’s D80 – the aptly named D90. D300 image quality, 12 mp, 6400 ISO and Video capability! Priced around $1,000.

I can feel the heat….

Klaus, that photo is all the more interesting because you’re on the other side of the fire.
Thanks for info about cameras. I’m looking for a new one and would appreciate any info on a good starter, mid-priced ranged DSLR. Most people I query say they have a Canon Rebel XTI. I eventually want to be able to do digiscoping so I don’t know whether to get a Canon or Nikon. Any thoughts?

Welcome!
Well – there are adapters for digiscoping – so whether it’s Canon or Nikon – no problem there.
Right now for a mid level camera my money is on the Nikon D90 (or the little more expensive Canon 50D). Both are exciting and well ahead of the curve of both Canon/Nikon cameras, that came before them. Especially the D90 with the ability to use it as Video camera. With a sensor size like that it will beat any regular Video camera out there in quality.
And worth the wait to September/October.
I take it this photograph wasn’t taken last week during the rainy hurricane? The heat shimmers really add to this picture. It figures Canon is coming out with the 50D when I haven’t even had my 40D for a year yet.

Klaus,
Thank you, that really helped. I have done some reading on Digiscoping but couldn’t find anything specific about Canons. I’ll be in Boston next month and wanted my new camera for that trip but might have to hold out for the Nikon. Do you mind telling me what a good point and shoot would be for the interim and for convenience when i don’t want to lug a DSLR around? I know you must get peppered with these kinds of questions so I apologize for adding to the load.

Love the effect on this shot, Klaus. I can feel the heat of the flames.
I have a Canon PowerShot S2 IS, and I can’t wait to get a new camera. I was thrilled with this when I got it 4 years ago, now not so much. I come here and look at your photos and my jaw always drops!

Love how you got the heat waves…makes it all seem surreal. Having just invested in my D40X and 18-200 motored lens, I guess I’ll have to wait to upgrade…

Fire is always fascinating. Being in Australia we saw the results of bushfires. Some of them were created by accident ,others lit intentionally to stimulate the growth of the eucalyptus trees. Let somebody tell me why it’s good for eucalyptus trees to be surrounded by fire.

Amazing photo. I was going to ask how you got the effects then realized it’s the heat from the flames isn’t it. Wow. That made this photo even more special. You never cease to amaze me with how you capture things.
As for the info on the camera, I’ve been trying to talk myself out of taking that step up. You’re not helping to curb that desire.

Glad this was a controlled burn and not some out of control rampage. Like how you took advantage of the situation!
No words for this one. I guess I can say, “Excellent.”

Love this shot, Klaus….great!!
By the way, Nikon also has the new D700 which is a full frame camera like the D3, but is half the price of the D3…same CCD which is amazing at high ISO values….virtually no noise. I will be selling my D300 and upgrading to the D700 as soon as my wife allows me…Klaus, I have been trying to email you, but I keep getting an error from your server…send me a quick email if you have another address…
Cheers,

Beautifully captured my good man, well done. The haze gives the kind of spread you’d find in an oil painting, magical.

Now you are photographing a subject I know allot about. Great capture with the heat waves combined with the color it is very interesting. I checked out the D90 on Moose Peterson’s and Nikons site the other day, it looks like a great camera for my sone, if he had the money.

Klaus: Amazing effect with the heat waves.
The heat shimmer really makes you feel the power of the image. And juxtaposed against the green and yellow uniform — fantastic.
