By now you know – that it’s not a beautiful woman, we’re talking about, but a beautiful spot on the map – the Emeralda Marsh.
I did initially come for birds – what else! But since I’m an omnivore – I won’t pass a Butterfly, Dragonfly
or Wildflower either!
And man – Emeralda did ever deliver. I can’t remember any day ever that produced so many lifers for me.
Today I will just look into Butterflies – which totally floored me.
Not so much at the scene – for I thought I was shooting the same Butterflies – just several times – but hey was I wrong. When pulling the images up on my PC I quickly noticed not only distinctive features, but also that I never saw these guys and gals before.
So it turned out to be a slugfest in Lifers, though a bit tough on the ID part of it – it took me 3 hours to get my Ducks in a row.
And here are the Lifers:
- Hackberry Emperor
- Empress Leilia
- Empress Louisa
- Empress Antonia
- Tawny Emperor
- Tropical Checkered Skipper
Question Mark and Sleepy Orange are sort of lifers. Have them, but pretty bad…
Enjoy!

time of year for butterflys? seems like I saw a lot more yesterday than usual. thought they had a short lifespan.
Wow, it seems like a great place to visit, I’d go nuts in a place like that. I enjoyed the panorama you included yesterday, it gives a good idea of what Emeralda is like.
Wonderful wildlife shots. But then I bet you get a lot of wild-ness down in Florida! Keep it up. I’ll be back…

What an awesome show! And the fine detailing is amazing1 I could even see the pattern on their eyeballs. Skippers are a favourite of mine and I enjoyed their entrance near the end. Wonderful blogging for sure!! What a grand day you must have had!
What more can I saw, you’ve posted a lot of superb material since my last visit.
Stunning as always! What a collection of butterfly shots!
Wow, wow, wow! After looking at these I think I should hang up my camera. These are absolutely beautiful. They couldn’t be any more perfect.

Wow! My daughter has a game called “Butterly Bingo” which shows us many butterfly pictures with names, but to us, most of them are far away and remote. Can’t imagine seeing so many in one day. I love the Swallowtail picture because those butterflies are just so elegant. But the Sleepy Orange Mating dance is my favorite. What a picture!
