My Site got hacked…

4 Categories: Photo-Journal •May 30, 2008

Yesterday evening I opened my site to find this in the header:

Your security is weak.. update your @#$, next time it will get deleted..
Hacked by [some morons]
have a wonderful day..

I changed the names - since these punks don’t deserve any advertising.

It took me about 2 mins to restore the “natural” order - but of course I went out and looked for vulnerabilities and shored up my security. If you encounter any problems while commenting etc.
please let me know.

Here are some tips on what I did - and you might want to look into, if you have your own site.

1. Changed my password(s) to a longer and difficult one, using digits in upper and lower case,
numbers and special characters like ^,% etc.

2. Read up on security measures for my particular Blog system (Wordpress). There are numerous
good sources out there for others, like, Typepad, Movable Type etc.

3. Password protected my Admin area

4. Performed a security scan, using the wordpress online security scanner

5. Installed AskApache Plugin to additionally shore up against exploits

6. Installed LoginLockDown, to prevent bruteforce Password decryption attempts

7. Installed WP-Scan, to check the overall vulnerability.

A good measure for security is also to keep your software up to snuff - update frequently. Not only the
main software, but also your plugins. Equally important is to read up upon them. Some are really shoddy,
when it comes to security, and it was one of those, that enabled my hacker to gain access.

All in all it goes to show, that no one is safe - even a puny little photo blog like mine can become a target.

So tighten up and do what it takes to give those crazies out there a run for their money!

Hmmm. I use Typepad. I suppose they do all this updating etc. As you know I’ve recently had some tech difficulties with my style sheet…this and a few other limitations have made me start to think about relocating. But then I don’t want to have the bother of maintaining my own site so I guess I’ll stay put.

Wow, so sorry to hear that there are still idiots out there that have nothing better to do than make life miserable for others.. Glad you were able to hold them off for now.
