Photoshop World 2008 – Orlando

Categories: Photo-Journal •April 5, 2008

Well – there I was – checking out Photoshop World. And it was both – good and bad.

Let ’s start with the bad stuff – to have that out of the way.

The conference itself – though with an attractive offer in courses was – and that’s my personal opinion,

prohibitively expensive. $700 for a few days for Non NAPP members is not only that – it is deterring and at the bottomline ridiculous. It is a trend you see everywhere and it is deterring and neither justified nor fair.

The Tech Expo was a joke. It was on the level of a local trade fair, which holds similar interest to watching grass grow.  With only a few exceptions, namely Epson and Kelby Training the displays were amateurish and sort of a letdown. Nikon e.g. missed out on their current good fortune and only had some courses (though high profile ones, which were free) but didn’t show camera’s or lenses at all. Bummer.

Canon at least showed some gear – but you had to be in the 1st row, to even notice it. A High School science Fair shows better presentations than that…

But – there were some positive Elements, too.The level of enthusiasm was staggering...

While I attended  sessions with Joe McNally and Vincent Versace, saw Scott Kelby and delivered
my hello to Moose Peterson, that he asked for in his blog, I couldn’t help to feel a little sorry for
the guys. Joe’s Demo of the wireless Flash capabilities of the Nikon SU-800 with 9 SB-800’s grouped
in 3 was very interesting – most of his audience appeared like above. Non photog’s they didn’t

grasp concept or application and struggled to hold up a freaking Flashgun without concealing the
receiver or pointing it straight forward.  Joe really was the right person speaking to the wrong
crowd. And he sure looked exhausted (no surprise, when you follow his blog – he doesn’t seem to get
a break).

Epson was however a highlight. Incredible Prints and printers and surprise – affordable!

All in all despite those highlights – overall it was a dud, and I really could have spent this afternoon
in better fashion.
